Press Release 2017

UOB Malaysia launches the first 'bank, dine and pay' mobile banking app for consumers in Malaysia

UOB Mighty enables multiple functions through a single app

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 31 October 2017 - United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd (UOB Malaysia) has launched UOB Mighty, an all-in-one mobile banking app that enables customers to turn their smartphones into electronic wallets and to enjoy great dining deals in Malaysia and across the region. UOB Mighty is the first mobile banking app in Malaysia to incorporate banking, dining and payment features in a single app.

To satisfy Malaysian consumers' love of food and dining out, UOB Malaysia designed the UOB Mighty app to offer its customers a suite of dining-related services including a directory of more than 2,000 restaurants in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Through the app, customers can search for restaurants, make a booking, submit a review and conveniently make cashless electronic transactions when they dine out. The features of the UOB Mighty app suit the lifestyles and preferences of Malaysian consumers.

According to UOB Malaysia's data1, the bank's customers are spending more on dining out and increasingly using contactless 'wave and pay' methods to settle their dining bills. In the last 12 months, UOB Malaysia's cardholders spent 20 times more at restaurants as compared with the year before. Over the same period, these diners made 10 times more contactless payment transactions than they did the previous year.

Mr. Ronnie Lim, Managing Director and Country Head of Personal Financial Services, UOB (Malaysia), said that Malaysian consumers like to dine out and are drawn to the ease and convenience of contactless payment options when paying for their dining bills.

"We designed the UOB Mighty app to offer our customers a simple and convenient banking and payment solution that matches their lifestyle preferences. UOB Mighty not only enables our customers to make restaurant bookings and to view the latest dining offers at their convenience, but also to make payments safely and securely offering the same protection as chip and PIN payments, " Mr Lim said.

Customers with a Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled smartphone2 and a UOB credit or debit card can securely make contactless payments through UOB Mighty with the assurance of tokenised security. Tokenisation is a method of encrypting a customer's card payment data on the mobile device to protect sensitive card information. Customers simply have to launch the UOB Mighty app, select the 'Pay' function, enter a PIN and tap to pay at NFC-enabled point-of-sale terminals in Malaysia and overseas. The UOB Mighty mobile app also enables customers to perform daily banking transactions safely, including checking available balances, paying bills and transferring funds on the go.

"With more people using smartphones in Malaysia, we see more banking on the go. UOB Mighty makes it possible for our customers to bank, to plan, to book and to pay for lifestyle-related activities through one simple app, bringing together a range of functions and benefits onto the screen of their smartphones," Mr Lim said.

UOB Mighty is available for download from Google Play and the Apple App Store. UOB Malaysia credit and debit cardholders who transact with UOB Mighty are also eligible to participate in the RM1 million cashback programme3, which runs until 4 February 2018. The full functionalities of bank, pay and dine are available to Android users with Android 5.0 and above. iPhone users require iOS 8 and above for banking and dining functionalities.
