UOB Malaysia and The Autism Behavioural Centre help children with autism build confidence and abilities through new multi-sensory facility

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 1 October 2019 – United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd (UOB Malaysia), in its commitment to helping children develop to their full potential has lent its support to The Autism Behavioural Centre (ABC), Malaysia’s largest Applied Behaviour Analysis therapy centre. The centre now has a multi-sensory room to help build the confidence and capabilities of children on the autism spectrum or with learning difficulties.

The room, called the UOB-ABC Multi-Sensory Facility, is designed to help stimulate the social, emotional and cognitive development of the children by engaging their senses of sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. Sensory rooms can help the children interact with the world around them by providing them with a safe environment to explore the world at their own pace. The facility comprises a number of sensory learning features including children’s sensory and climbing walls.

Mr Raymond Chui, Executive Director and Country Head of Business Banking, UOB Malaysia, said, that UOB Malaysia is committed to helping causes that empower local communities and improve lives, especially those of children.

"Many children with autism and learning difficulties find it challenging to perform everyday routines on their own such as going to school and interacting with others easily. We hope that through the UOB-ABC Multi-Sensory Facility, we are able to offer an environment that is conducive for them to develop the confidence and the skills they need to learn and to adapt to their surroundings independently.”

Ms Charlene Marie Samuel, Founder and Director of ABC, said the new multi-sensory room will be a valuable addition to the Centre and it will enable them to offer a comprehensive learning experience to the children who attend the Centre.

“With the additional space and new learning equipment at the UOB-ABC Multi-Sensory Facility, we will be able to carry out more activities to support our individual therapy sessions. We can also provide our children with a safe, interactive space for them to engage with their peers and surroundings. This will help further develop the children’s personal confidence and social skills in their everyday life. Thanks to UOB Malaysia, we are able to strengthen our capabilities to positively impact the children that attend the Autism Behavioural Centre,” Ms Samuel said.

UOB Malaysia’s support of the UOB-ABC Multi-Sensory Facility is part of the UOB Heartbeat Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme, which underpins the Bank’s long-term commitment to the communities in which it operates through partnership, philanthropy and participation initiatives. UOB Malaysia’s Heartbeat CSR Programme comprises a number of key initiatives, including the annual UOB Islamic Banking Aidilfitri outreach activity, UOB Heartbeat Run/Walk event, the UOB Commercial Banking Lunar New Year outreach event and the UOB Heartbeat Employee Volunteerism programme.
